[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n\n\tT<\/span>he <\/span>western part of Nepal, near <\/span>Anapurna<\/span> and <\/span>Manang<\/span>, where our expedition of 15 <\/span>people <\/span>had b<\/span>een since October 14, was not affected by the earthquake.<\/span> It was <\/span>perfectly<\/span> safe for tourists. The same <\/span>applied<\/span> to 65 other areas<\/span> that were<\/span> teeming with tourists before April. But this <\/span>year<\/span> was different.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Phurba<\/span> Sherpa, who worked with our expedition in the Himalayas, said that <\/span>this <\/span>was his first expedition since the earthquake. Tourists, trekkers, and mountaineers are still afraid to <\/span>visit<\/span> the quake area. They <\/span>do not have to be<\/span>. Only 10 out of 75 <\/span>areas<\/span> had not been completely rebuilt<\/span> due to<\/span> the fact<\/span> many <\/span>roads were blocked by <\/span>landslides and landslips. The areas of <\/span>Lantang<\/span>, <\/span>Sindupalchok<\/span>, <\/span>Dulkha<\/span>, <\/span>Dading<\/span>, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur<\/span>, <\/span>Solukumbu<\/span>, Gorkha, <\/span>Rosuwa<\/span>, a<\/span>nd <\/span>Nuwakot<\/span> still needed<\/span> to be rebuilt. Despite <\/span>the poor <\/span>roads, we were going to visit the latter because of <\/span>the construction of<\/span> the new school.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”9px”][vc_column_text]In the past six months, the number of tourists in Kathmandu <\/span>had fallen<\/span> by 75 percent. Hotels, also <\/span>called<\/span> lodges, are being closed. <\/span>Only w<\/span>hen <\/span>we were walking<\/span> through the v<\/span>illages <\/span>which were <\/span>once full of people, we met the locals. <\/span>During the<\/span> ten days of our trekking, we kept meeting five different groups of trekkers. Before the earthquake, we would <\/span>be <\/span>walking in <\/span>lines<\/span>. Now, we say hello at sunrise and meet again in two days.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”9px”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

India yet to open the border for fuel<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The o<\/span>wners of shops, restaurants, and agencies near <\/span>Manaslu<\/span> and <\/span>Lantang<\/span> are worried about the rest of the season. It is not <\/span>only<\/span> the lack of tour<\/span>ists, on which their livelihood depends but <\/span>also their neighbour India. Due to a disagreement over the new Nepalese constitution, the border<\/span> was <\/span>closed not only <\/span>for <\/span>fuel and durable goods but <\/span>also<\/span> for medicine and food. The Indian minority in Nepal wants more rights and <\/span>has got<\/span> the support of the Indian government. Until Nepal <\/span>gives way<\/span>, the lives<\/span> of more than 30 million people<\/span> will be affected.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1534765729380{padding-top: 38px !important;padding-bottom: 36px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Sometimes <\/span>only<\/span> in the countryside, today even in <\/span>the big<\/span> cities,<\/span><\/p>\n

many people cook on <\/span>improvised fireplaces<\/span> in the middle of the street.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Since October 13, when the Dashain Festival began (it lasts until the full moon), the government has been using national fuel reserves. On the roads, not only in <\/span>the <\/span>cities, but also in every village with a petrol station, there are kilometres long traffic jams and long queues. Bikers (most Nepalese cannot afford a car) are allowed to buy five litres, <\/span>while <\/span>car owners can <\/span>may<\/span> up to 15 or 20 litres of petrol. The shortage of <\/span>natural <\/span>ga<\/span>s has forced people to use wood<\/span> stoves and look for alternative<\/span>s<\/span>. <\/span>P<\/span>roblems <\/span>are mainly found <\/span>in hospital<\/span>s<\/span> and other public institutions, <\/span>especially<\/span> in cities. <\/span>Sometimes <\/span>only<\/span> in the countryside, today even in <\/span>the big<\/span> cities, many people cook on <\/span>improvised fireplaces<\/span> in the middle of the street.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”9px”][vc_column_text]India denied Nepal access to fuel for a full 14 months<\/span> in 1945<\/span>. Tourists <\/span>who now travel<\/span> in larger groups have difficult<\/span>y<\/span> getting a bus. <\/span>To s<\/span>ee<\/span> the locals riding<\/span> on the roof <\/span>of the bus <\/span>is <\/span>pretty <\/span>a common sight.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
